Tadka Dal

Coriander 1/4 Cup
Cumin Seeds 1 tsp
Garlic 2 cloves finely chopped
Ginger 1 tsp grated
Green Chili 3
Hing A pinch
Moong Dal 1/2 cup
Oil 1 tbsp
Onion 1 Chopped
Red Chili 1
Red Chili Powder 1/4 tsp
Salt To taste
Tomato 1 Chopped
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp
Water 2 1/2 Cups

  1. Prep : Wash the Moong dal. Chop the tomato, onion, garlic green chilli and coriander. Grate the ginger.
  2. Cook the Dal : Add rinsed dal with turmeric powder, tomato, onion and 2 cups water in a pressure cooker and cook for 3 to 4 whistles. Turn off the flame and wait until the pressure go off. then, add little more water, red chilli powder and salt to the dal and simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Make the Tadka / Seasoning : Heat oil in another pan, add the cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds splutter, add the green chilies, ginger, garlic, hing and broken red chili and fry for around 10 seconds. Pour this seasoning now over the dal and mix well.
  4. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

  1. Adjust the amount of water you add to the dal based on whether you want your dal runny or thick. 
  2. You can use ghee instead of oil for seasoning to give an added flavor.
