Sweet Modak

Rice Flour1 cup
Grated Coconut2 cup
SaltA pinch
Sugar1 cup
Water1.5 cup

  1. Prep the dough: Boil the water and mix it with the rice flour. Leave it untouched for around 10 mins to set. Then knead to a fine dough.
  2. Make the Filling: Mix the grated coconut and sugar in a bowl.
  3. Shape the Modak: Make a ball with the dough and flatten it, then add a spoonful of the filling and mould the dough to your desired shape. You can also roll the dough and cut it into different shapes and add in the sweet filling into it. Make sure you seal the dough without any cracks when you shape it.
  4. Steam the Modak: Boil water in a steamer. Once the water has boiled, place all the shaped modaks in the steamer and steam for 10 to 15 mins on a medium flame. The rice flour will cook and bind completely. Enjoy the modak.

  1. Ensure the rice flour you use is finely powdered. Seive it before you use to remove any lumps or coarse pieces.
  2. For the more classic recipe, swap the sugar with jaggery and make sure you mix the jaggery with the coconut by stirring over low flame. This will help the jaggery to soften and incorporate into the coconut. When using regular sugar, there is no need to heat the mixture.
  3. Adjust the amount of sugar based on your taste.
