Mini Kozhakattai (Modak)

This is the savory version of the sweet modak.

Curry Leaves5 - 10
Dry Red Chilli2
Mustard Seeds2 tsp
Oil1 tbsp
Rice Flour1 cup
SaltA pinch
Urad dal1 tsp
Water1.5 cup

  1. Prep the dough: Boil the water and mix it with the rice flour. Leave it untouched for around 10 mins to set. Then knead to a fine dough.
  2. Shape the Kozhakattai : Make small balls with the dough. Make sure you seal the dough without any cracks when you shape it. 
  3. Steam the Kozhakattai: Boil water in a steamer. Once the water has boiled, place all the shaped Kozhakattai in the steamer and steam for 10 to 15 mins on a medium flame. The rice flour will cook and bind completely. 
  4. Season / Temper: Add oil in a pan and drop in the mustard seeds and curry leaves in the oil. once the mustard seeds sputter, add the dry red chilies and urad dal. Saute for a few seconds and then add the steamed Kozhakattai and mix well.

  1. Ensure the rice flour you use is finely powdered. Sieve it before you use to remove any lumps or coarse pieces.
  2. Seasoning or tempering is not mandatory, you can enjoy the savoury Kozhakattai as is by skipping this step.
  3. Make it in small or large size according to your preference.
