Sprouts Salad

How many times have we heard about the goodness of sprouts. Everyone says they are healthy. My mom would ensure we eat them as often as possible. She would sprout the grams at home but today its easy enough to get them in a super market. Here we will tell you how easy it is to make your sprouts at home in 3 simple steps and how you can enjoy a delicious no cook salad with them.

This recipe requires some prep work as the sprouts will need 2 - 3 days to make. Soak lentils of your choice overnight, then drain and tie the lentils in a muslin cloth and keep them dry. They will sprout in 2 days generally.

Once the sprouts are ready, its all about making a yummy salad to enjoy the goodness of the crunchy sprouts.

Serve your sprouts salad is a retro jar. Serving salads in a jar is the new in thing and I am trying to keep up with the new trends in food. :)

To Soak and Sprout:
1/3 cup dark brown chickpeas
1/3 cup green gram
1/3 cup light brown chickpeas

1 onion, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
1 green chili, chopped finely
1/4 cup cucumber, chopped long
1/4 cup coriander leaves, chopped
1/2 teaspoon chaat masala (or to taste)
Juice of 1 lemon
Salt to taste

  1. Make the sprouts by first soaking the "To soak and sprout" ingredients overnight. The next day, drain the water and tie the lentils in a muslin cloth and leave the cloth hanging for a couple of days. This will help develop the sprouts.
  2. Once the sprouts are ready, mix all the ingredients under "Other" with the sprouts and serve the salad.

  1. Chop the cucumber as you please, we chopped them into long sticks to add a dimension to the salad.
  2. Chaat Masala is a tangy spice powder used in India, you can substitute it with dry mango powder (a.k.a amchur powder) or decide not to use it. You can also add raw mango instead.
  3. We prefer rock salt over regular table salt to add a more distinct flavor.
